Launching Your Action Step #2: Write the Action Content

Learn how to write the content of your action, use variables and personas, and AI-generated content.

Let’s write the content that your advocates will interact with as they take action.

⚠️

This step is only available on Email, Letter, Call, Social, and Media Regulation actions.

Survey actions have their own unique content setup step. Learn more about Surveys.

If you’re creating a Story or Petition action, you can skip directly to Customizing the Action Widget.

🎯 Who Am I Writing Content For?

  • Email, Letter, Call and Social actions: the content will be sent to an elected official or custom target.
  • Media: the letter will be sent to your chosen media outlet.
  • Regulation action: the comment will be posted on regulations.gov under the chosen regulation docket.
⚠️

This content is NOT an external communication to your advocates. Write the content keeping in mind that your chosen targets will read it.

👥 Content Variations

At times, you may want more than a one-size-fits-all approach to contacting legislators. With AdvocacyAI, you can create as many content variations as you need and we’ll show the advocate the best variation for them to encourage them to take action.

Our selection is based on the persona of the advocate taking action. If you create content with multiple “Send to” profiles, the content variation they are shown also depends on the party of their lawmaker.

💡

As a best practice, we recommend that you create at least one variation that “Anybody” can send to “All” targets. For more personalized content variations, use the Personas and Recipients options detailed below.

🖊️ Drafting the Content

Use the options below to customize the content of your action.

  • Personas: The profile of the person sending the email. You can select from our default options or create your own personas. Learn more about Personas.
  • Recipient: The profile of the person receiving the email, whether they are a Democrat, Republican, or Independent.
  • Language: If your account has access to multiple languages, you can choose a language for each email variation you write.
  • Content Variables: Use the following variables to customize your content. You will see placeholders as you create the content, but advocates will see the variable filled out once they take action.
    • Advocate variables (blue): these variables are based on the information provided in the action widget. These include: first name, last name, city, county, township, and state.
    • Lawmaker variables (orange): title, name, state, and district.
    • Advocate custom field variables (green): create custom fields in AdvocacyAI to upload and collect more data about your advocates. Use these fields in your message for increased personalization.
    • Target custom field variables (purple): create custom fields in AdvocacyAI to upload metadata about your targets. Use these fields in your message to anchor it in your target’s district data.

⚠️

Only the supported values in the “Insert Variable” dropdown are supported in the tool. If the variable is incorrectly formatted, it will send the wrong value rather than the intended content. We do not recommend entering variables manually.

🤖 Ada-Generated Content

If Ada drafted content is enabled in your action, you can get content suggestions from our AI based on the information you provide. Use the following options to personalize the message:

  • Context for AI: Provide context for Ada about what the action is for, your goals, and any other information that will make the content draft more relevant for your organization and advocates.
  • Personas: The profile of the person sending the email. You can select from our default options or create your own personas. Learn more about Personas.
  • Recipient: The profile of the person receiving the email, whether they are a Democrat, Republican, or Independent.
  • Language: If your account has access to multiple languages, you can choose a language for each email variation you generate.
Tone: choose the right tone to ensure that the appeal to your targets matches the intent of your ask. Open this toggle for a list of available tones.

Once you have your settings ready, select the “Generate New Content” button at the bottom of the right column. The AI will take a moment to generate the content. Allow for more time depending on the complexity of the Information for AI prompt.

The generated content will open in the “Save your Content” section for your review. You can further utilize AI and generate “Shorter”, “Longer”, or “Simplified” versions using the corresponding buttons below the content editor. Additionally, selecting “Generate New” will create a new piece of content to be edited.

✏️ Managing Active Content

Once you save an email, it will appear under the “Active Email Variations” section. When advocates take action, they’ll be shown one of the approved versions from that section. Each email will show the selected persona, recipient, whether it’s human-written or AI-generated, and its language. Manage your active emails using the options below:

  • Edit: change the message within your content.
  • Archive: moves the message out of the “active” category into the “archived” category. Advocates will no longer send this message variation, but you can bring it back anytime.
  • Generate Content Versions: create slightly different versions based on an active content variation.
    • Click on the subject line of the email to open it up, then click the “Generate Content Versions” button. Choose how many versions to generate, then confirm. Once generated, these versions will be saved as a draft for you to review.
      • Notion image
  • Translate: if your action has multiple languages selected, you can translate an active variation to another language.
    • Click on the active variation to open it up, then click the “Translate” button and select your desired language. After the translation is generated, the new version will open up in the content editor for you to review and approve.

Once you save your content variations, click on “Finalize Campaign” to design your widget.
