Tags are customizable data points that you can create to organize your Advocates in the system. They are best utilized for segmenting Advocates to better refine your audiences.
🤔 What Are Tags?
Tags are a great way to organize and segment Actions and Advocates within AdvocacyAI! You can use them to filter Actions, track advocate information, create an audience from tags, and run workflows in our journey builder.
How are tags different than custom fields?
- Tags: Better for internal labels that you can use to organize advocate information and
- Popular use cases: issue types or focus areas, event attendance, advocate acquisition source (Meta Lead Ads, newsletters, etc.), etc.
- Custom Fields: Better to track advocate information that the advocates themselves can provide at any point. You can use AdvocacyAI custom fields in Actions and Survey Questions to gather data directly from advocates.
- Popular use cases: advocate type (donors, volunteers, etc.), membership status,
🚀 Let’s Create Your Tags
To create new Tags, navigate to the Advocates section and then select Tags. Within the Tags section, you will see any previously created Tags. In the example below, you will see that the account does not yet have any Tags created.
- Navigate to the Create Tags section of this page in the right column.
- Type the name of the Tag you would like to create and its description. Be sure to select the Enter or Return key on your keyboard before selecting the Save Tags button.
- To create multiple Tags at once, type the name of each Tag that you’d like to create with each Tag separated by a comma or entering an additional name after selecting the Enter or Return key on your keyboard.
If you are creating multiple Tags at once, they will have the same Description. If each Tag needs its own Description, you will want to create them one at a time.
🏷️ Applying Tags to Advocates
Action Submissions
Tags can be automatically applied to any advocate that submits through any Action. This will ensure that every advocate that participates in the Action has the Tag(s) added to their advocate record. Don’t see a Tag you would like to use? Tags can also be created during Action setup as well!

Upload of Advocates
Tags can be applied and removed to Advocates through an Upload in the system. You will need to navigate to the Account tab and then Upload. To learn more about uploading Advocates, please visit the help document about uploading Advocates.
Important notes: be careful with the “Exclude tags” checkbox and “Override all uploaded fields.”
🔍 Searching and Viewing Tags
Tags can be viewed on an Advocate’s record and searched for in Audience creation.
Searching with Tags in Audience Builder
While you are building a new Audience (learn how), you can search for Tags in the Advocate section. Simply select the Tags you would like to search on from the dropdown menu. You can type ahead if you know the name of the Tag. Additionally it is multi-select, so you can search on more than one Tag at once.
Viewing Tags on Advocate Profiles
Tags appear as read-only on an Advocate’s record in their own section.
