This guide covers settings that are unique to Petition Actions. For a general overview on the steps to create an action, check out our guides below:

  1. Action Setup Details and Targets
  1. Write the Action Content
  1. Customize the Action Form

📋 What Is a Petition?

A Petition is a campaign that collects advocate signups around a specific message or cause. It is the simplest form that you can launch to:

  • Acquire supporters to add them to your list (signup for newsletters, policy updates, etc.)
  • Allow advocates to add their name to support a cause

Petitions are typically one-step actions, making them faster to submit. Advocates read the petition text in the same step where they enter their information. A one-click action experience!

⚙️ Build Your Petition Action

To launch a petition, you’ll set up the action details and customize the form your advocates will interact with. Read our Set Up Action Details and Targets help guide for more details on this step.

Write Your Petition

In the Petition Settings card, write the text advocates will read on your form widget.

  • Title: A short, compelling headline for your petition or signup form. You can insert advocate-specific variables to personalize the message.
  • Body: The full petition or signup form text. Use the rich-text editor to add formatting (bold, bullets, links) and insert variables to personalize the message.
⚠️

If you use variables, you must enable the two-step action feature (detailed in the next step). The advocate must provide their information in the first step so the platform can populate these variables.

If you've enabled Ada-Drafted Content and filled in the Information for Ada field, click "Generate Petition" in the sidebar to have Ada produce an initial draft. You can edit it freely before anything goes live.

🎨 Customize Your Action Form

Customize the look and feel of your widget, collect more data from your advocates, and customize what happens after they take action. Read our Customize the Action Form help guide for more details on this step.

Two-Step Action

By default, your petition text will be shown above the advocate information fields. They’ll read your petition text, then enter their name, email, and other required details.

A two-step petition requires advocates to enter their information first, then click your action button to preview the petition text.

What does the Petition export look like? You can download a CSV file with the information of the advocates that signed your petition.

❓ FAQs

❓ Can I personalize the petition text with advocate details?

Yes. Use the Variables dropdown in the Title and Body fields to insert dynamic values like the advocate's first name, city, county, or state. When an advocate views the petition, those placeholders are replaced with their actual information.

⚠️

To ensure the variables populate with the advocate’s information, you must enable the two-step action feature. You can do this as you customize the action form.

❓ What's a Two-Step Action?

A Two-Step Action splits the petition into a two-step experience. In the first step, advocates enter their information. The petition appears in the second step, after they click your action button.

➡️ What's Next?
